What is my bill for?
If you received a bill or an invoice from Compass Dermatopathology, it was for dermatopathology services. Most likely, you went to a dermatologist who decided to biopsy a lesion of your skin. The specimen then needs to be processed at a laboratory so it can be diagnosed under a microscope by a specially trained dermatopathologist. Compass is the laboratory where the specimen is processed and diagnosed. When we are done, we send your dermatologist a diagnostic report, then he or she will make the decision on a treatment plan, if needed, and notify you of your diagnosis.
Where are the multiple charges on my bill?
There are only a few different types of charges on your bill. Firstly, there is one 88305 billed per specimen. If you had one biopsy on your arm and one on your back, that would be two 88305s on your bill.
The other types of codes we bill are for additional testing needed, also known as “special stains”. Special stains help the dermatopathologist diagnose difficult or particularly sensitive cases. Our use of special staining is almost 25% less than the industry standard and is used as infrequently as possible.
Less commonly, we bill for Direct Immunofluorescence (DIF) which is a very complicated test we perform only for certain rare diseases.

Is there a cash discount?
Yes, we charge $70 per specimen if the patient is paying cash. Special stains range from $100-$200 depending on the stain.
Do we offer payment plans?
We do offer payment plans on a customized basis. We want you to get the best possible quality care and so does your dermatologist. Please give our billing department a call and they can work with you to create the best plan
